In 1979, the Who released the album “Quadrophenia”. In 1973 director Franc Roddam had been hired by a British film company to make a movie based off this album. The movie itself was not made until 1977 and was completed in 1978. It starred Phil Daniels as Jimmy Cooper and Sting as Billy, rivaled for popularity by a group called the “Mods” who were led by Johnny Ace. In their time, The Who had been known as "rock's first serious band". However, in 1973, they were not the only serious band in the Who. The American band "The Grateful Dead" beat The Who to be called Britain's greatest export. They were pioneers in the development of folk rock. By 1979 there had been many changes with The Who. The original members of the Who had lost some interest in being a rock opera band and are no longer interested in being a rock star.
